Me and the NRPS

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I sat in with the New Riders of the Purple Sage on the radio last night, quite unexpectedly. They were playing on my show, and although I have sat in with them a couple of times recently, I didn’t have so much as a guitar pick with me when I got to the station. The invitation was issued, and a guitar and amp (and pick) were produced!

I played and sang on a few of their songs, and took the lead on “Four Strong Winds.” I had suggested it last month in Atlanta, because Buddy Cage played steel with Ian and Sylvia – and because it’s a great song, of course. David Nelson’s response was, “Oh, yes! Anything by Ian Tyson!” So we did it at Smith’s Olde Bar, and after the show some of the band members pronounced it
their favorite song of the evening. So we did it again last night. So sweet.

I’ve been invited to join the fun tonight at the Great American Music Hall, too. Other invitees include most of Ratdog, Peter Rowan, and I’m not sure who else. I’ll be there with my ’56 Les Paul Junior and brand new Fender amp!

Remembering George Harrison

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

From Paul Ingles in New Mexico:

Five years ago today, I was laying in bed in the early morning hours when the clock radio clicked on with the news that George Harrison had died.  I can remember feeling this huge vibration rattle down my spine and a mixture of sadness and appreciation swept through me at once.

It’s no secret that the Beatles had a huge impact on my life.  If you’re getting this email it’s because it’s something that I know (or suspect) is true of you too.

Today I will spend a little time recalling George’s life and music.    Here’s an 8 minute piece and links to other material about George if you care to spend any time reflecting yourself this week.

Jake’s Leg celebrates 30 years

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Drea Stein writes from St. Louis:

Just wanted to let you know that Jake’s Leg celebrated their 30th anniversary last night (Friday, November 24). They sold out an 1,800 seat venue. That was the first time that a local band ever sold out this venue. Our local paper ran a really nice article on them that I thought you might enjoy.

They have always put out such a great vibe and last night was totally awesome. Yeah, I’m proud of our guys….

peace, drea

I played a gig with Jake’s Leg a few years ago. Great bunch of guys, and they do the music proud. Congratulations!!

DTTW – special time this week + NRPS live!

Monday, November 27th, 2006

This week’s (Wednesday, November 29) Dead to the World starts at 9:00 pm (an hour late) and runs til midnight.

KPFA is broadcasting a fundraiser for the Pacifica Network Archives on November 28 and 29, and it ends Wednesday at 9pm PST. Larry Kelp has graciously yielded his “Sing Out” air time so we can do our two-hour live broadcast of the New Riders of the Purple Sage – it’ll just start an hour later, and continue until 11 pm or so.

The NRPS set will be webcast on nugs.net in additional to the usual KPFA.org and KFCF.org webcasts. And of course, broadcast the old-fashioned hi-fi FM way on 94.1 in northern California and 88.1 in Fresno CA.

Hard Truckers speaker cabinets return

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Press release:

DECEMBER 1ST, 2006 MARKS THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF AN IMPORTANT COG IN THE GRATEFUL DEAD WHEEL

After Thirty Years on the Road and a Brief Hiatus
The Hard Truckers are Back.

Back in 1975 a fledgling company formed in the Bay Area. Two Grateful Dead Roadies, Steve Parish and Joe Winslow, took what they learned as part of the team that built the Grateful Dead’s legendary Wall of Sound and began commercially building the touring professionals’ speaker cabinet. On the cutting edge of technology, the Hard Truckers produced speaker cabinets’ years ahead of their time. Used by the Bay Areas’ biggest rock stars, these hand-made speaker cabinets toured the world and back. Well now, Steve, Joe and the Hard Truckers are back.

The Hard Truckers are proud to announce their return to the music gear scene. For this leg of the trip the Hard Truckers are honored to have their good friends from Tone Tubby speakers along for the ride. Called “the most significant development in speaker design for decades”, Tone Tubby and their hempcone speakers are committed to tone. The Hard Truckers are again doing what they do best as they set the stage for the hottest speakers the market has ever seen.

Joining the original blond Hard Truckers Baltic Birch 2 x 12” extension cabinet (JG-1) is their new, ground breaking and bio-friendly, 2 x 12” Hemp and Bamboo cabinet (“The Fatty”). The new Hemp Cabinet sounds spectacular and is set to turn the industry upside down. Colonel Bruce Hampton calls his hemp cabinet “Hands down the best cabinet I’ve ever played.”

The Hard Truckers are also setting out to change the industry by offering stunning “Hand-dyed, one-of-a-kind, removable speaker grills that will set Hard Truckers cabinets apart.

Hand-made works of art, the Hard Truckers are the professional answer to generic gear. Musicians of all levels will benefit by the return of the Hard Truckers.
