THE OTHER ONE (with Dennis McNally)

On August 12, Bob Weir and Ratdog performed in Lowell, Massachusetts as part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of On the Road, a seminal work of Beat literature by Jack Kerouac. Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally, who grew up in Lowell and wrote biographies of both Kerouac and the Grateful Dead, read excerpts from the original manuscript of On the Road, accompanied by Ratdog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Gary Lambert posted a colorful account of this event in the features section of Dead.Net, titled “Out We Jumped In The Warm Mad Night (with Neal, Jack and RatDog).”

Electric Hummus!

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Got this gig announcement today:

Gone are the days when Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead roamed the country, but his legacy is the music he left behind. Playin’ Dead, Boston’s top Grateful Dead tribute, brings that Deadhead vibe to its shows. Featuring former members of Dark Star Orchestra, Laughing Water, Electric Hummus and Tampa’s Uncle John’s Band, Playin’ Dead is a six-piece rainbow full of sound that proves the Dead’s music will never stop.

Review of “Twisted Love Songs”

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Eric Levy posted a review of Twisted Love Songs on the CD’s page at CDBaby.com. An excerpt:

All of the songs themselves are wonderful…. But the high point of the album is the extraordinary instrumentals, and my favorite of those is Cassidy’s Cat, a brilliant combining of repeated riffs from three Grateful Dead songs (Cassidy, China Cat Sunflower, and Bird Song). The album is a joy start to finish, and another must-own from an under-appreciated artist.

And while we’re at it, here is the full text of Ken Herrick’s review from the Twisted Love Songs page:

To me, it’s really hard to understand why David’s CDs are so hard to find. (except for CD Baby). He’s a really good and interesting guitar player, writes good distinctive songs & covers other nice stuff & with his radio show has a built in audience. This, to me is his best effort so far.

You can sample the tracks at CDBaby, and if you don’t want to buy the whole CD you can download individual tracks from CDBaby’s partners, including the iTunes Music Store.

Rex benefit at the Fillmore 10/4

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

I just got invited to play between Dark Star Orchestra sets at the Black Tie Dye Ball Thursday, October 4 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. It’s a benefit for the Rex Foundation. Reception etc. start at 5:30; showtime is 8pm. More info here.

This show is part of DSO’s Rex Caravan Tour – a dollar from every ticket sold on the tour (aside form the Black Tie Dye Ball, which is all for Rex) goes to the Rex Foundation.

I chatted with DSO drummer Rob Koritz about the Rex Caravan Tour a couple of weeks ago. Listen here.
