Grisman on DTTW this week

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I’m goin’ on the road for a week, but Tim Lynch has lined up a treat for this week’s DTTW!

David Grisman and I had such a nice time talking on KPIG the other day that we’ve decided to do it again. The Dawg will join me on KPFA this Wednesday night from 8pm-9pm PST. We’ll talk about and play tracks from his new release with John Sebastian, as well as many other of the excellent recordings in the Acoustic Disc catalog. I think he’s going to bring his mandolin to demonstrate some of the different styles he’s incorporated in his music over the years.

Grisman, Haynes, and Aiken on the Saturday Ham Jam!

Friday, November 9th, 2007

This just in from Tim Lynch:

KPIG Saturday Ham Jam
1:00-3:00pm on KPIG 1510-AM Piedmont / San Francisco

Tomorrow’s (Saturday, November 10) guests are David Grisman, Warren Haynes, and Caroline Aiken!

Grisman just put out a terrific duet CD with John Sebastian, titled Satisfied.

I spent some quality time with Caroline Aiken at the Folk Alliance western regional conference last weekend. She’s playing at Caffe Trieste in Berkeley tonight, 8-10pm, and my wife and I will be in the audience. She is a fine singer, songwriter, and guitarist!

And y’all know who Warren Haynes is, of course! Gov’t Mule’s latest, Mighty High, is reggaelicious, with the great Toots Hibbert among the guests and a kickass cover of “The Shape I’m In,” too.

Rex Foundation launches a blog

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

This just in via email from the Rex Foundation:

Dear Friends,

In 1983, the same year the Rex Foundation began, Buckminster Fuller announced, “We can now solve all the problems of hunger and need across the world, having all the available resources and technology; all that we need is the political will.”

Perspectives on The Will to Change, the new Rex newsletter, now in the mail and also accessible online, seeks to launch a conversation about what it might take to generate the necessary will — in our nations, in our communities, and in ourselves — to bring about positive change, and in a positive way. We hope you’ll join in.

We invite you to visit the Rex Foundation Blog and share your thoughts about The Will to Change. And keep checking in, as over the next few weeks we’ll be presenting different issues that were raised in the newsletter to invite more of your ideas. Together, we can use technology’s tools to brainstorm and share information, to spark connections and ideas that help generate the will that’s still very much in need.

Check out the Rex Foundation home page for information on all upcoming events. We look forward to the fun, connections, and beneficial results of traveling with you on the philanthropic bus of the Rex Community Caravan.

Thank you for all of your support!

New concert release series: Road Trips

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

From the introduction to the series by Blair Jackson:

With Road Trips we’re going to try something a little different. We want to plug in a few more pieces of the Grateful Dead puzzle by putting the spotlight on different tours and series of shows that have been neglected through the years. Take Road Trips Volume 1, Number 1, for instance. This two-disc set (plus a special Bonus Disc for a limited time only) was culled from the Dead’s blazing fall 1979 East Coast swing, when the band was just hitting its stride with new keyboardist Brent Mydland. You’ll find killer versions of “Dancing in the Street” > “Franklin’s Tower,” long exploratory jams on “Playing in the Band” and “Terrapin,” a rattle-your-brain “Shakedown,” and lots more, all pulled from the master tapes in the vault and expertly mastered in HDCD for maximum power and clarity by Jeffrey Norman. The Bonus Disc offers another hour-and-a-quarter of highlights from the tour.

Every Road Trips release will come with a beautifully designed booklet containing an essay about how the music on the discs fits into the Dead’s long history, plus many rare and never-before-seen photographs. We think you’ll agree it’s a pretty cool package. But wait, there’s more (as they say)! When each “edition” of Road Trips is announced on this site, we will also give you a link to an affiliated site devoted to the series which will include such goodies as articles and reviews from the tour (See one reviewer after another mess up Grateful Dead song titles! See the band savaged by cretinous critics!); additional photos; and any other weird/cool stuff we come across.
