Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR! I am heading out for a week of performances in my favorite corner of the universe: Utah, Colorado, and Arizona!

The January 4 show at Mystic Hot Springs (Monroe UT) will also be a video shoot, ’cause that is Mystic Mike’s hobby and I could use some pro-shot vid for the promo kit.

I hope to see many friends and meet some new ones on this tour.

LEAVE A LIGHT ON

First of two parts, taken from a live broadcast on KPFA November 18, 2009. Mark Karan was about to begin a west coast tour in support of his first solo CD, Walk Through the Fire. I asked him to bring in some of his favorite musical moments from recent months – Ratdog (of course), and his own band, Jemimah Puddleduck, etc. I got hold of some of the recordings from the gigs he was promoting, so the program opens with a medley from the official west coast CD release party 11/20.

Ghosts of Electricity was a Halloween Bob Dylan tribute (audience invited to dress as images from Bob’s songs!) at the great east bay dance venue, The Ashkenaz (where, by the way, I will be performing on Thursday, January 7, with my “Beatles jam band” Rubber Souldiers). The band included Mark Karan, Stu Allen (now working with Missouri’s The Schwag and touring with Melvin Seals and JGB), Pat Nevins, keyboardist Mookie Siegel, bassist Robin Sylvester, and drummer Greg Anton.

Support for the Grateful Dead Hour comes this week from Confessions of a Dead Head: Trips and Travels with a Magical Band, the new book by Starburst Commander, veteran of nearly 300 Dead shows, written strictly from a fans perspective; an emotional and heartfelt journey into the music that defined an era and continues to define a philosophy that will not go away. This is the most interesting part of the show – this whole post-drums. Bob Weir uses an odd galloping rhythm guitar style in “Iko Iko.” And then there’s that fake-out at the end of Stella Blue: Jerry plays the intro to “Around and Around,” and Bobby launches into “Sugar Magnolia”!

KPFA needs a boost

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

KPFA just announced to staff members that they are making some major cuts to the budget.

“These are very hard times for our listeners, for the media, and for non-profits around the country,” our station manager tells us. “The residents of Northern California have been hit hard by the recession and so have we. In our recent fund drives, our listeners have been supporting us consistently, but have only been able to afford to give smaller donations, which has resulted in a significant decline in our revenue.”

I’m asking my listeners to make a contribution right now if you can afford to. I’m making a donation today, too.

If you look back over the playlists for this year and previous years, you’ll see a hell of a lot of live performances from the KPFA studios. I had Dan Hicks and band in on December 2; Hot Buttered Rum on September 9; Mushroom on April 8; Todalo Shakers on March 18; Boris Garcia on December 8, 2008; The Lindells on October 29, 2008; Free Peoples on October 1, 2008. Over the years we’ve had The Waybacks, Peter Rowan, Bob Weir and Ratdog, Wake the Dead, Railroad Earth, Donna the Buffalo, Bill Kirchen, Shana Morrison, Keller Williams, Tea Leaf Green, ALO – I’ve lost count of all the great live performances we’ve been able to put on the air free for nothin’ because of KPFA.

For that reason alone, the station deserves our support. And there are so many more reasons to support KPFA.

Please make a contribution. This page gives you several options. Any amount you can give will be hugely helpful, be it five, fifty, five hundred, or five thousand dollars.

Thanks for reading this, and thank you for supporting KPFA.

P.S. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Tony Ferro, who volunteers his time and audio engineering talent to put those live shows on the air. He, too, does this for the love of music and the music community, and I know he shares my concern for KPFA’s financial health. The sterling quality of our live performance broadcasts is Tony’s gift to all of us.

Recording “Life Is a Jam”

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I spent Sunday 12/13 in Jeremy Goody’s recording studio with four excellent musicians: Mark Karan (Jemimah Puddleduck, Bob Weir and Ratdog), guitar; Mookie Siegel (David Nelson Band), keyboards; Joe Kyle, Jr. (The Waybacks), bass; and Dave Brogan (ALO), drums. We spent a delightful afternoon getting several takes of my new song “Life Is a Jam,” with a very different jam at the end of each take.

I’m planning to release this as a digital single. Not much point in waiting (nor sufficient cash) to do another full-length studio CD at this time, so I did this because I had a few bucks and it’s a step forward in the direction of more steps forward. Plus I had a blast with these GREAT players! So much fun, in fact, that I didn’t take a single photo.

“My Improvised Life”

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

This afternoon I spoke to the Rotary Club in Oakland. My connection to the Grateful Dead was the hook, and my theme was “My Improvised Life.” I recorded it on my iPhone, if you’d care to hear it. It’s about 27 minutes.

Thanks to C.J. Hirschfield (executive director of Children’s Fairyland) for inviting me!
