Live Dead ’69 is a new supergroup that’s already done a couple of tours and will be on the circuit this summer. This edition of the band included half of Ratdog – Mark Karan on guitar, Robin Sylvester on bass, and Jay Lane on drums. Also on board are former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten and guitarist Slick Aguilar, who was part of the late Paul Kantner’s Starship lineup for many years.

The Skull & Roses Festival was three-day event at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, where the Grateful Dead played many times in the 1980s. The tribe was gathering at this site in July 1986 when the news came down that Jerry Garcia was in a diabetic coma…

The name David Nelson comes up often in Grateful Dead history. David was part of the early-60s folk, bluegrass and old-time scene on the San Francisco peninsula that gave birth to the Grateful Dead. Nelson was part of that band that called itself the Hart Valley Drifters for a short while and did that radio broadcast that was recently released. David Nelson co-founded the New Riders of the Purple Sage, played in the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band in 1987, and has led The David Nelson Band for twenty-odd years.

Nelson took a fall a few months ago and had to have surgery on his shoulder. Since that time he’s been diagnosed with a from of cancer, and he’s being treated for that now. (You can look for updates on his condition at nelsonband.com) than cancel a scheduled tour of Alaska in March of this year, the Nelson Band invited their old pal Bob Weir to take the trip and front the band. The repertoire included a few songs from Bobby’s recent release Blue Mountain, along with a generous helping of Grateful Dead favorites.

Special thanks to Tim “Sounddawg” Stiegler for getting the audio files to me in record time!
