David Gans continues to honor the Dead
Musician, writer, historian plays Buchanan Common
by Jeremy D Bonfiglio 7/26/18

Excerpt:

“One of the most important things that I learned from the Grateful Dead was to treat all material equally,” Gans says by phone from his home in Oakland. “The Dead were amazing songwriters and really, really brilliant interpreters of other people’s music. Then, of course, there is a lot of improvisation in there as well, so I consider myself a spiritual child of the Grateful Dead in that I treat all material equally and just try to tell a story without favoring one or the other.”

This is an especially interesting stretch of music in a show that’s pretty great overall. “Eyes of the World” was usually delivered at a very fast clip in this period, but somehow the band tipped into a more relaxed, kinda cruising groove here. After Eyes, when Bob and Jerry left the stage for the drums, Brent Mydland stayed out there and eased into one of his sad blues songs, “Never Trust a Woman.” Phil Lesh stayed with him – and as the song unfolded, Jerry and Bob came back out and played some more. Enjoy!

BIRD SONG

I especially enjoyed the interplay between Jerry Garcia’s guitar and Brent Mydland’s keyboards in “Bird Song.” Lots of interesting adventures in this recording – we’ll hear more of 4/3/82 in the next few weeks.

I’ve been listening to the Dead & Company summer tour as it has unfolded, and I am seriously impressed! I mean, I knew it would be good, but it is exceeding my high expectations! The Barton Hills Choir is a grade-school ensemble from Austin, Texas, under the direction of Gavin Tabone. I’ve done three live performances with the Choir, and I contributed to two songs on their second collection of Grateful Dead favorites. Here’s a link to a video for “Eyes of the World.”
