TO LAY ME DOWN (11/9/73)

Here’s the story on the Jerry Garcia home demo:

In the spring of 2016, my wife and I paid a visit to Mountain Girl, Carolyn Garcia, at her home in Oregon. She sent me home with an unmarked reel of tape, to see if I could figure out what was on it. What I found was mind-blowing! It was a demo of six new Hunter-Garcia songs that Jerry made in his home studio – songs that were introduced to the world on February 9th, 1973. Three of those songs were recorded for Wake of the Flood, which was released in October of 1973, and the other three wound up on Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel a year later.

Jerry had a small studio behind the house, complete with a multitrack recorder, so he was able to rough these songs out on his own and present fairly well-developed arrangements to the Grateful Dead members, who of course adapted these parts to their own magical instrumental styles.

This is Jerry Garcia’s home demo of “Eyes of the World,” with Jerry singing, playing an acoustic guitar and, I think two keyboard parts. My mind was blown when I first heard this tape, and I have been waiting seven years for the rest of the world to get to hear it!

BIG RIVER (5/26/73)

This Dead & Company performance of “Fire on the Mountain” is unique: in addition to the usual lead vocal by bassist Oteil Burbridge, we were treated to a vocal performance by Mickey Hart! Mickey co-wrote the song with Robert hunter, and there is an unreleased studio recording from the mid-’70s that features Mickey singing! You can hear it here. The lyrics were pretty different, too. Mickey came down from the drum rider and sang his verse near the end of the song, just this one time.
